The Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services (GAFMS) has organized a mental health training for its Medical Officers, Physician Assistants and Nurses in all garrisons under the GAF, to equip primary care providers with knowledge and skills for screening, identification, clinical assessment and treatment/interventions of common health problems.
The capacity building workshops – which are intended to be monthly events – were held between January 16 to February 23, 2023, with the 7 Medical Reception Station (7MRS), Ho, Volta Region, successfully launching its version which it dubbed “Gunners’ Wellness and Therapy Hour”.
With an increase in Mental Healthcare for GAF personnel and their families, the Gunners’ version aimed at creating awareness on substance abuse, various forms of gambling addiction, and a showcase of some services available to troops at the wellness clinic.
A few of such services include counselling on Drug Adherence and on domestic issues, as well as wellness clubs in schools and organizations.
In attendance at the 7 Garrison event was the Second-In-Command of the 66 Artillery Regiment, the Volta Regional Mental Health Coordinator and a Psychologist from the Ho Municipal Hospital.
